Engaged Immigrant Youth Program Draws in Youth with Basketball
Every Wednesday after school Filipino youth from four VSB secondary schools converge at South Hill's gym to compete in a basketball tournament. This program is planned and led entirely by immigrant/refugee youth (both boys and girls) from John Oliver through the Engaged Immigrant Youth Program. This youth-led initiative gets a great weekly turn-out of 50 youth.
Patrick Saludo is one of the key organizers of the basketball tournament. He says the group chose basketball to organize around because of its draw in the Filipino community.
"We have all these people from different schools here to play basketball," he says. "We want to connect with different schools together. It is important because this is the best way to socialize."
Saludo says if he weren't hitting the court he'd be at home wasting time and watching TV.
