Nootka Hosts Thanksgiving with an Aboriginal Twist
The Aboriginal Cultural Day hosted by Nootka Elementary School on Oct. 5th was an opportunity for the students to experience Thanksgiving with an Aboriginal approach. The teachings in the tee pees were informative and thorough. The aim was to give Nootka students background information about the traditions of the Aboriginal Peoples' celebration of the harvest, which has been done for thousands of years.
During the day, each class was invited outside and ducked into the tee pee where they learned about Aboriginal cultural practices. The day ended with parents being invited to join with students and enjoy some traditional food together.
