Upcoming VSB SWIS Lunar New Year Event Brings Together Community to Celebrate
To celebrate Lunar New Year, the Vancouver School Board Settlement Workers In Schools (SWIS) Program: Project 3B, Kerrisdale Community Centre, VSB Aboriginal Education Department, Point Grey Secondary and David Thompson Secondary Schools are collaborating to present the fifth annual Lunar New Year Multicultural & Resource Fest 2014.
The event will be held at the Kerrisdale Community Centre on February 15 from 1:00pm to 4:30pm at 5851 West Boulevard.
The event consists of two parts. The Lunar New Year Performance is from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Programs include Aboriginal Blessing & Welcome Dance, Double Lion Dance, Kung Fu Demonstration, Children New Year Songs, Youth Hip Hop, Indian, Chinese & Korean Ethnic Dances, Newcomers Choral Ensemble, Chinese & Western Instrumentals and Taiko. Performances showcase the amazing talents of immigrant students and parents from schools across the district.
The festivities will also include games booths featuring calligraphy, paper cutting, a lantern puzzle, a bowl of fortune, and a mind labyrinth.
Along side the game booths, the VSB Aboriginal Education Department, MOSAIC, SUCCESS, Vancouver Public Library (Kerrisdale), Kitsilano Neighborhood House and the Kerrisdale, Marpole & Oakridge Community Policing Centre will be onsite hosting resource booths to inform the community about their programs and services.
