For five days and four nights, Vancouver ACE IT Carpentry students from Killarney Secondary repaired an old cabin located on Anvil Island in Howe Sound.  Students were exposed to many tasks including installing roofing, re-leveling floors by raising the foundation, constructing and pouring new foundation footings, reconstructing walls, fixing siding and installing subflooring. 

During the weeklong work experience, students worked under the supervision of Randy Montroy and his crew from Randhill Construction Ltd.  During the day, students were occupied with a variety of construction related tasks.  In the evening, Randy and his team discussed and shared thoughts about the construction industry and career development.

It was a unique opportunity for students to learn in a real world situation, and be mentored by those in the field.  "We learned a lot and [Randy and his team] have really prepared us for the work force," says Joy, a Grade 12 student from Magee Secondary.

The ACE IT Carpentry program program is a dual credit program that includes credits for Level 1 BCIT technical training in carpentry as well as credits towards high school graduation.  ACE IT allows students to receive post-secondary training while in high school.
