This year, one of the topics of focus with the Magee Leaders Program is food security and food waste in our society. As a way to learn more and discuss this topic, the Magee students recently went to Vancity Theatre for a screening of "Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story".

Just Eat It is a 74-minute documentary film made in Vancouver about food waste and food rescue in partnership with British Columbia's Knowledge Network.

In the film, director/producers Grant Baldwin and Jen Rustemeyer pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away-after they catch a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed away each year in North America.

The students and teachers had an opportunity after viewing the film to discuss how we as a western society approach food. Many students were surprised at how much food waste we create, with one student commenting, "I was amazed at how they (Grant and Jenny) had way too much to eat, even living off discarded food."

"What strikes me about this issue," says Allison Kerr, Vice-Principal at Magee. "Is that at the VSB we are at the introductory stages of our district recycling program. The students will now be taking what facilities has given us as a starting point and begin to move Magee's recycling program to the next level."

The Balwin and Rustemeyer will be coming to Magee in April to speak to the Magee community.

ABOUT THE MAGEE LEADERS PROGRAM
The Magee Leaders Program is essentially a school within a school. The program takes an alternative approach to education, offering an enriched curriculum of integrated studies, challenges and unique experiences to a limited number of highly motivated students. It is a leadership through service model that has student cohorts tackling challenging issues.
