Middle Earth Descends Upon The Van Tech Library
"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
The students of the Van Tech Summit Program take literature seriously. Each summer the Grade 8 Summit students are tasked with reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Over the course of the fall semester they work together to create their own version of a hobbit's banquet based on their studies-with pizza and ice-cream cake.
This past December marked the 10th anniversary of the Summit Hobbit Banquet, and to celebrate the occasion students showcased their writing and musical talents with thank-you speeches, creative songs and riddles based on the book.
The highlight of the afternoon was a surprise visit from Gandalf's dog, a prize winning bearded collie, who fit right in with the all the wizard beards and furry hobbit feet.
