Byng Secondary was awash in music on Friday, February 27 during the performance of their symphony orchestra. Led by teachers Scott Maclennan and Odette Kurth, roughly 50 students dressed in their best formal black clothes took to the stage of the Byng auditorium to give a series of stirring performances.

During the day the auditorium filled up with elementary students from the secondary school's neighbourhing family of schools. In the evening, local "subscribers" took their seats and prepared to experience some powerful music.

Byng Principal Annette Vey-Chilton says she isn't surprised by how professional and polished the Byng Symphony is. She says they practice twice a week throughout the year leading up to the big symphony performances, which are seen as hallmark events in the school community.

However, she says particular thanks need to go to Maclennan and Kurth for making the symphony such a great success. 

"They are just so committed and passionate about what they do. The kids are always the beneficiaries and the benefits go well beyond the classroom," she says. 

She says the incredible quality of music is part of the reason Byng's students were recently invited to perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York.
