Following a competitive application process this past winter, Point Grey Secondary student Michelle Lam was selected to participate in the 2015 CEMC Workshop in computer science at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. Due to the volume of applications, final selections are made via a random lottery from a pool of only the strongest eligible applicants, making the Grade 9 student's selection as the only attendee all the more remarkable.

The yearly workshop, at one of Canada's to computer science departments, is designed to give Canadian Grade 9 and 10 female students interested in computer science a unique opportunity to learn more about the discipline. Through lectures, labs and hands-on activities, the workshop explores the foundations and applications of computer science that have a profound effect on the world today.

During the last week of May, Lam attended the event and upon returning to Point Grey reflected on the seminar saying "through this experience I was able to learn the basics of the many fields that branch from computer science. It was really amazing to be able to learn with the other girls from all across Canada. 

In addition to academic benefits and intellectual challenges, the workshop also provided a fun way to preview university life, network with experts in the field and make new friends from across the country. Lam is certainly on track towards great things in computer science, because, in the words of the workshop's slogan, "CS Girls Rock!"
