Cow Milking and Calf Feeding in South Vancouver: Mobile Dairy Classroom pulls into McKechnie Schoolyard
Recently, students at McKechnie Elementary had some very special visitors. BC Dairy's Mobile Dairy Classroom stopped by for the morning and shared with the students information about dairy cows, life on a farm, and the BC dairy industry.
The presentation was made all the more impressive by Libby, a 680kg Holstein, who, students learned, eats about 45kg of food a day, uses her 30cm tongue to grab at her food, and who has no top teeth.
"It's a great opportunity for our students," says Karen Rosberg, Principal at McKechnie. "We have a dairy program here, where students receive milk twice a week. And, truthfully, many of our students would otherwise never get to see a cow this close. It's something we all look forward to."
Also visiting for the day was TJ, a two-day-old calf. A little tired from the morning's feeding and all the excitement, TJ happily spent his morning resting in his raincoat.
