Uzume Taiko Rocks Selkirk with Japanese-Style Sound and Movement
Students, staff and parents at Selkirk Elementary recently began the day with a real treat - the gymnasium was transformed into a celebration of rhythm, movement and cultural education. Students learned several Japanese traditional cultural elements, enjoyed rich storytelling, and were introduced to a number of Japanese instruments, including the mighty taiko drums.
Over 500 students could be seen tapping their feet and moving to the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies produced by the performers.
"All in all, Uzume Taiko set the beginnings of another great day at Selkirk!" said Vice Principal Doug Roch.
In addition to great beats, the performers also weaved in contemporary humour that was enjoyed by everyone.
