Windermere Leadership Students Prepare to Host 7th Annual Climate Change Conference

Grade 11 Leadership students from Windermere Secondary School are in the midst of organizing the seventh annual Climate Change Conference (C3).

This year's theme: 'What are You Willing to Lose?'

This for-youth, by youth conference strives promote the importance of youth engagement and to connect secondary school students from across the lower mainland who are passionate about making a difference in their schools.

The conference includes keynote speakers and panel, interactive workshops, and a zero-waste lunch. Throughout the day, attendees will be educated about various topics such as climate change, fracking, food security and much more. The event will also be offering a wide variety of other workshops, including: Weaving with Invasive Species by local artist, Sharon Kallis, & Still Moon Arts and Media for Social Change by Eliot Z Galan.

The conference keynote panel lineup will include Harsha Walia, who is the co-founder of No One is Illegal and has been named one of the most influential South Asians in BC by the Vancouver Sun. In addition, our second keynote speaker, Eugene Kung, is currently a lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law and has a strong passion about human rights, environmental justice and strives to use the law as a tool for social change. Past keynote speakers have included Seth Klein of the CCPA and Jim Hoggan of the David Suzuki Foundation.

C3 events have attracted up to 300 students from across the lower mainland, from as far as Kelowna. Keynote speakers of the past include Seth Klein of the CCPA, Andrew Weaver, a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work as a climate scientist, and Jim Hoggan, Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation. Students and staff agree that the event is an inspirational day, and many attendees are expected to return this year.

This year's C3 will be held on Friday, November 27, 2015 at Windermere Secondary School (3155 E 27th Ave) from 9 AM - 3 PM.

C3 will be a zero-waste event and Windermere students hope to see as many attendees as possible.
