Magee Students Share Strong Opinions with Federal Environment Minister about Climate Change

On May 17, the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, hosted a town hall discussion on clean growth and climate change with students at Magee Secondary. The morning began with a welcome from Shane Point, VSB's Elder in Residence. Student leaders from Magee emceed the event, and VSB Board Chair Mike Lombardi welcomed the Minister to VSB. The Minister took the stage and presented some information about what the federal government is doing to consult and take action on climate change. She then asked the students for their input.

More than 400 Magee students attended the town hall, and dozens queued up at the microphones to offer their ideas on how to reduce our individual and collective carbon footprint. Students offered their thoughts on topics such as:

  • Solar or electric powered aircraft
  • Animal agriculture and vegetarianism
  • Tearing down houses and old growth trees
  • Creating more green technology for developing countries
  • Carpooling and electric vehicles

The minister encouraged students to post other ideas to Environment and Climate Change's interactive website at "canada.ca/climateaction
