A class of Grade 5 students at Shaughnessy Elementary have created a small sea of poppies outside Vancouver City Hall to remember soldiers who have fallen in war.

This is the second year Shaughnessy Elementary students have created the display, which was inspired by a 2014 art installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London called Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.

Although smaller in scale, the students in Division 6 had to work hard to create 22 poppies each out of pop bottles and paint in just nine school days. The 616 poppies they installed outside City Hall on November 7 doubled the size of the display from last year.

"The poppy is a good way to symbolize reflecting on the whole meaning of Remembrance Day," said teacher Carla Pace. "The poppy is such a strong symbol and the students embrace it and embody it with their efforts."

In addition to creating the art work, the students also researched and discussed the two world wars.

"We try to talk to them about peace and honouring the soldiers," Pace added.
