Information Bulletin: Vancouver School Board votes to reinstate the School Liaison Officer program
At the Vancouver School Board public meeting on Monday, November 28, 2022, the Board voted on a motion about reinstating the School Liaison Officer (SLO) program. The motion passed.
Based on discussions, including consideration of information provided by the members of school communities, the broader Vancouver public as well the Board’s formal stakeholder groups and others, District staff will write to Chief Constable Palmer and the Vancouver Police Board to request the implementation of a revised and reimagined program. Per the motion, the intent is to have an effective and operational program no later than September 2023, that takes into consideration the thoughtful inputs and opportunities from the 2021 SLO engagement report along with input by stakeholders and the community in the last several weeks.
In passing the motion, the Board outlined that staff will provide updates to the Policy and Governance Committee on progress in development of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the VPD and report about how the program will work collaboratively with the District’s Safe and Caring Schools team.
Since its inaugural meeting held November 7, 2022, the Board held three meetings to hear input by community members in addition to one meeting for the Board’s formal stakeholder groups. The Board also received written information provided by community members. The thoughtful input assisted the Board in its deliberations.
Recordings of all of Board meetings are available on the District's YouTube channel.
