Personnel Highlights Oct 3

The Vancouver School Board’s Personnel Committee held a meeting on the evening of Tuesday, October 4, 2023. For meeting details, view the agenda package or watch the live stream.

There were two information items on the agenda: a staffing and recruitment update and another regarding wellness and occupational health & safety.

Staff reported to the committee about VSB’s recruitment during the summer and current efforts. VSB continues hiring qualified/certified staff for all positions including recruiting for all teaching areas, trades, support staff, skills trades and others. Since May 2023, 198 teachers and 140 support staff were hired. Internally, the staffing team has filled 640 teaching positions and 139 other support staff. For upcoming and ongoing recruitment outreach, staff will continue to use in-person promotion at career fairs and other events, online advertising, public signage and interviewing graduates of education programs.

Next, staff presented an update about wellness and occupational health & safety. The wellness team will continue to utilize professional development days for various wellness sessions. Occupational health & safety stepped away from paper forms and launched OurHealth for online reporting of hazards and incidents. The platform has been well-adopted in its early days.
