Prior to receiving reports from the meetings of the facilities planning and education plan committees, a special ceremony was held with Morgan Guerin, member of Musqueam and councillor with the Musqueam Indian Band. As he addressed the audience, Morgan blanketed trustee Fraser for her long allyship with Indigenous Peoples and work to advance reconciliation in the education sector throughout the province and within VSB.

Superintendent’s Update

In her regular update to the Board, superintendent McGregor highlighted many events, celebrations and school-year end activities. These included recognition of Lia Dodge, student support worker (SSW) at Bayview Elementary as the latest recipient of the Superintendent’s Tribute, an overview of events marking National Indigenous Heritage Month and Pride Month in addition to graduations and other school-based events. She also shared news about accomplishments by VSB students at the Canada-wide Science Fair and that VSB saw a record number or participating schools – 41 – in the annual Bike to School Week.

Student trustee Update

In her final update to the Board as student trustee, Mia Liu, recounted her experience sharing student voice at the Board table for the last two years. She also highlighted activities by the Vancouver District Students’ Council (VDSC) throughout a busy 2023-2024 school year – from raising more than 213,000 cans for the CANley cup to the 70-participant sister school switch in addition to budget advocacies related to bathroom resources and electronics. She closed with well wishes for in-coming student trustee, Athena Yu of Magee Secondary School who will assume the role in the upcoming school year.

Board Business

As matters arising from the facilities planning committee meeting, the Board approved the school district’s 2025-2026 five-year major capital plan for submission to the Ministry of Education. The plan includes several seismic mitigation program (SMP) proposals and new school and school addition requests for consideration by the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Question Period

At each regular public meeting, the Board provides an opportunity to members of the community to submit questions about Board governance matters and agenda items. The submission form is open from 12:00 p.m. the day of Board meeting and closes after the Board receives committee reports during its meeting. The chair responded to three questions submitted this month.
