Chair’s report and Board elections

The first item on the evening’s agenda was the presentation of the chair’s annual report, outlining accomplishments of the Board in the 2023-2024 term.
Following, the agenda moved to the elections for chair and vice-chair for the next one-year term. Trustees re-elected trustee Victoria Jung as chair and elected trustee Janet Fraser as vice-chair. They will serve in these capacities for the 2024-2025 term.

Superintendent’s update

This month, superintendent McGregor presented the monthly superintendent’s tribute to Lynne Kennedy, teacher at Hastings Elementary and Kirk Gummow, District counsellor, in the safe and caring schools department. She then continued her update to the Board about events around the District including acknowledgement of unionized workers on November 5, the annual Take our Kids to Work Day and the Grade 12 Indigenous leadership retreat. She also shared details about how students and staff observed Indigenous Veterans Day (November 8) and Remembrance Day. Trustees were also informed about VSB career programs, that in collaboration with Skilled Trades BC Youth Programs, hosted more than 100 students and their caregivers for the annual Construction Trade Info Night at Tupper Secondary. McGregor’s update to the Board concluded with highlights about the latest VSB: After the Bell episode that focuses on digital literacy with special guest, Jesse Miller.

Student trustee report

Student trustee Yu informed the Board about plans for this year’s Canley Cup fundraiser and about VDSC’s ongoing work to highlight the student leadership fund. She also shared details about the council’s annual retreat that focused on enhancing collaboration and understanding the role and responsibility of student voice.

Board business

The Board received reports from the education plan committee meeting held November 6. As a matter arising from this committee, the Board approved the recommendation to close the Middle Years Programme (MYP) effective June 27, 2025, and directed staff to develop a closure plan.

The Board then received a report from the finance and personnel committee meeting that took place November 13. It approved two matters arising from the committee: the Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) and the 2025-2026 Financial Planning Process. The final report received was from the policy and governance committee that held its last meeting on November 13. There were no matters arising.

The Board also received a notice of motion: Democracy, Accountability and Public Participation at VSB Board and Committee Meetings. That motion was referred to the policy and governance committee.

Question period

At each regular public meeting, the Board provides an opportunity for members of the public to submit questions about Board governance matters and agenda items. The submission form is open from 12:00 p.m. the day of Board meeting and closes after the Board receives committee reports during its meeting. There were four questions submitted that were all related to the Middle Years Programme and they were responded to by the chair.
