In this module for grade six, formal mathematics are developed through hands-on activities related to building a fish rack for the salmon harvest.
3. K-12 Port Alberni Inclusion of Aboriginal Principles in Math
Math topics based on Primary, Intermediate, Middle and Secondary grades. The topics are done through "Kits". The kit consist of; Button Blanket Unit, First Nation stamps, sample of First Nations forms. Pictures of the forms are done in artwork. Topics covered are; Numbers, Number operations, Pattern and Relations, Variable and equations, Shape and Space, Measurement, 3-D and 2-D Shapes, Transformation ,Statistics and Probability.
Kits are developed to help the understanding of Aboriginal culture and integerating into mathematics. Aboriginal topics are; Artifacts,Bentwood boxes,Canoes and Paddles, Cedar Bark,Drums and Songs,Masks and Headdresses, House Posts and Welcome Figures and Salmons.
4.Cross Cultural Science and Math in Dentalium Harvesting
Gloria Snively,looks at Indigenous science as ways of ,"engaging students in authentic cross cultural science inqueries". Uses the example of "Money from Sea" to discuss the contributions that Aboriginal people have made to science. Looks at various tools made by Aboriginal people that were effective fishing, hunting and gathering. Explains the importance of bringing Elders and other other Aboriginal resource persons to incorporate Indigenous science into their teaching practises. List examples of how students can explore ideas on how Aboriginal people have incorporate their own science and contributions to society.
